Last Sunday I made a detour via Rouen on my way back from the Normandy coast. I walked down the Rue du Gros-Horloge until I reached the cathedral. I settled at a café terrace in the Espace du Palais, a new shopping mall. The book I am writing has plunged me into the heart of the Sixties yet nothing in the colored, refurbished town center suggested that period. Only after considerable effort was I able to recapture the town back in those days, stripping it of its bright façades, reinstating its gray, drab appearance, reviving traffic in the pedestrian streets.

I stared at passers-by. I thought of that game where you have to make out silhouettes concealed among the lines of a drawing. Somewhere in the crowd there might be one of the students I had known in 1963: I can see them so clearly when I write, yet today they have become invisible to me. At a table nearby sat a handsome girl—chestnut hair, dark complexion, small, pouting lips—who reminded me of LB. I fondly imagined that she might be her daughter.)
